How to Use Adobe in Your Browser

When you use Adobe inside your browser, you will notice that extra icons appear near the top and bottom of your browser window. These are features that are normally found within the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Here are some of the main icons that appear, with a description to help you use them:

Adobe Icons (Top)

At the top of your browser window (just below the address bar) you should see a set of icons that look like this:

This is the printer icon. Use this button if you would like to print the current page.

These next 3 icons all deal with how to view the layout of the document. As a default, the first icon is always pressed. This allows you to view the current document, centered on the screen, using the entire screen. The second icon, if pressed, opens a second embedded window to the left of the document which allows you to view an outline of the entire document. From this outline, you can go to any page within the current document. The third icon in the group uses the same window to the left and lists each page of the document. You can simply click on the page number you want to view and it will bring it up.

These next 5 icons all relate to viewing and and modifying documents. The first icon is the Copy icon. I will come back to this icon in a minute becuse it cannot be used until another button is pressed. The second icon, the one that looks like a hand, can be used to move up and down within a page of a document. Simply move your mouse onto the document, and while holding down the left mouse button, move your mouse either up or down. This will grab hold of the page and move it accordingly. The third and forth icons are the "Zoom" icons. Use the first one to zoom in on a page, and the second one to zoom out. You simply move the magnifying glass over the portion of the text you would like to zoom in or out of and click the left mouse button. The last icon here allows you to highlight text. Simply click on this icon, and it turns your cursor into a straight line, almost like something you would see when using Microsoft Word or Wordperfect. When text is highlighted, then you may use the "Copy" icon to copy the text to the clipboard, just as you do in Word or WordPerfect.

These next 6 icons all relate to navigating within the current document. The first icon lets you jump to the very first page within the current document while the second icon brings you to the previous page within the current document. The third icon takes you to the next page and the fourth icon jumps you ahead to the very last page of the current document. For example, say you are on page 10 of a 50 page document. The first icon will bring you back to page 1, the second will bring you to page 9, the third will take you to page 11, and the fourth will take you to the end, page 50. The last two icons in this group allow you to go back or forward to the previous viewed page. They operate exactly like the "Back" and "Forward" buttons do of your normal Internet Explorer or Netscape.

These 3 icons operate in the same manner as the "Zoom" icons. The first icon lets you view about half the page, with the document centered on your screen. The second icon lets you view the entire page, centered on your screen. The third icon uses the entire screen to view the document, thus enabling you to only see about one third of it at a time.

These 2 icons let you search through your document to find certain words or phrases. To find a word or phrase, simply click on the first icon, the one that looks like binoculars, and enter the word(s) you would like it to search for. This works in the same manner as Mocrosoft Word or WordPerfect. The second icon allows you to search the document again with the LAST word(s) you did a search for. So this icon will only be enabled after you have done a previous search.

Adobe Icons (Bottom)
